How to Attach a Surf Leash

How to attach a surf leash – tips

  • Firstly make sure the leash string is not too long.  The “railsaver” piece is intended to protect your board when under strain.  If the string is hitting the board then it will cut through an cause damage
  • Likewise make sure the string isn’t too short or you can’t get the railsaver through!
  • Make sure your string knot is a good one.  No point in having a good leash with a poor string knot.

How to wear a surf leash + safety tips

  • Your leash goes on your back foot!
  • Put the leash on under your wetsuit – putting it over it will not let water drain out easily and cause “bottle leg”
  • Put the leash on so the cord sticks away from your foot (not to the inside/between your legs). This reduces the chance of a tangle when getting to your feet
  • Don’t run without holding onto your leash to shorten it – give it time and you will see many people trip over their leash as they run into the surf!! To be safe put your leash on at the last minute!
  • Be super careful when jumping off rocks with a leash – it’s very easy to have it catch on a rock corner and result in a seriously dangerous situation.  Hold your leash so it is not dragging and watch it carefully as you prepare to jump.  If in doubt just try and paddle out instead.
  • Don’t rely on a leash to keep you safe – if you can’t swim in you shouldn’t be out there

How to choose a surfboard leash

  • Make sure it the right size – see below for size table but basically the leash should be about the same size as your board
  • If a leash is too short it becomes dangerous with not enough space between you and your board when you wipe out
  • If a leash is too long it can take a long time to retrieve your board in the white water and also create excess drag when paddling for a wave

What to look for in a good leash

  • Double stainless steel swivel – if it doesn’t swivel then the leash gets twisted and tangled with your feet
  • Strong urethane construction – strength is important
  • A good velcro strap with quick release straps
  • A key pocket in a surf leash can be handy as well
